Accident Summary:

AIRCRAFT 736 WAS THE FOURTH AIRCRAFT IN A FLIGHT OF SIX WHICH
WAS CONDUCTING A FINAL EXTRACTION. THE AIRCRAFT HAD REFUELED
AT SONG BE APPROXIMATELY TWENTY MINUTES EARLIER.
THE AIRCRAFT CIRCLED THE PICKUP ZONE TWICE BEFORE BEGINNING
THE APPROACH. ON SHORT FINAL TO THE PZ THE PILOT REPORTED THAT
THE ENGINE STARTED TO SURGE. AT THIS TIME THE AIRCRAFT APPARENTLY
SUFFERED AN ENGINE OR TRANSMISSION FAILURE.

THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER TOOK CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT AT
APPROXIMATELY 60 FEET AND 20-25 KNOTS. DUE TO THE LIMITED SIZE
OF THE LANDING SITE AND THE FACT THAT IT WAS THE ONLY SUITABLE
AREA AVAILABLE, THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER ATTEMPTED TO AUTOROTATE
THE AIRCRAFT INTO THE PZ. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED HARD,
AND THE FUEL CELLS RUPTURED CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT
TO IMMEDIATELY BURST INTO FLAMES. THE INFANTRYMEN FROM THE
GROUND UNIT IN THE PZ HELPED THE CREWMEMBERS OUT OF THE AIRCRAFT.\\
